LGBTQIA+ Counselling
I have been a proud and active member of the LGBTQIA+ community for over 25 years.
In that time, I have been honoured to be involved in many aspects of the community politically, artistically and socially.
I am forever impressed and inspired by the strength, resilience and compassion we show each other. The challenges we often come up against - both as individuals and a group in general - are unique to our community.
Regardless of what stage you are at on your journey, I know from personal experience that sometimes it can be easier to open up and be honest with someone who is also part of the community. Because of this, I am proud to offer counselling, working together with any and all members of our rainbow family and allies.
Awakened Counselling is a safe space where you and/or your family and friends can come to talk through anything you like, with language that you are comfortable with, in an open and honest discussion, with humour, support and empathy.
We can work together to navigate your experiences, enhancing your existing resilience and coping strategies, while also increasing confidence, communication skills, improved relationships, and a greater sense of belonging.
LGBTQIA+ Support
While many people experience challenges at different times throughout their lives, those of us who identify as LGBTQIA+ are more likely to experience concerns such as:
low self-esteem
anxiety and/or depression
self medicating
self harm
isolation
feelings of judgement
Identifying as LGBTQIA+ does not cause these problems, the reasons why those in the community are more likely to experience them are very complicated and every experience is unique. However oftentimes it’s most likely to do with things such as:
homophobia, biphobia or transphobia
discrimination
social stigmas
concerns about the reactions of family/friends/workmates
social exclusion, isolation and/or rejection
It’s important to realise that embracing your identity can also have positive impacts on your wellbeing such as:
increases your confidence
can provide freedom of self-expression and self-acceptance
increased resilience
a sense of community and belonging
bringing you closer to your friends and family
a better sense of self.
Counselling can help you navigate these challenges while supporting your authenticity, safety and integrity.
